THE VERDI CORNER

The beautiful soul of Italy is found in the Language of Music, and Giuseppe Verdi is its Colossus, standing astride not just a political nation but a global poetic culture. Giuseppe Verdi (1813 – 1901) is perhaps the most extraordinary artist in the history of mankind. Opera composer, conductor, farmer, politician, patriot, philanthropist – no other artist more fully and completely represents the conscientiousness of a culture than Giuseppe Verdi. His career spanned seven consecutive decades and his operas are still the most popular to be performed. His name is synonymous not only with the formation of Italy as a nation, but with the very concept of Italian.
However, Maestro Verdi would prefer to remind us that the ultimate goal of Art is to serve humanity. Verdi’s extraordinary success enabled him to exercise extraordinary charity. He built bridges, nursery schools, roads, irrigation systems, hospitals, and even a retirement home for destitute musicians, all of which still benefit the citizens of 21st century Italy!
