Here's the story... Bastien and Bastienne (1768..when Mozart was 12!) Music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Libretto by Friedrich Wilhelm Weiskern Translated by Dr. Harry N. Dunstan
Place: A pastoral village Time: Today Bastienne, a shepherdess, thinks her beloved Bastien, a shepherd, has been paying too much attention to that floozy, the Lady of the Castle. Herr Colas, the village sage (in reality, the village flim-flam man) comes to the rescue, advising how she can win back her beloved: “Ignore him! I will do the rest!” She leaves to tend her sheep.
Bastien swaggers in, proclaiming how much he loves Bastienne, but Herr Colas informs him that it is too late…Bastienne, having discovered his foolish attention to the Lady of the Castle, is now enjoying the affections of someone new. It is now Bastien’s turn to ask for help. Herr Colas “casts a spell” on the simpleton and declares that Bastienne is now back in love with him. But when the pair suddenly (without warning!) encounters one another, Bastienne ignores Bastien and decides to torment him just a bit longer. But in the end, love conquers all and the two agree to reconcile. Herr Colas joins them as they sing a finale in praise of love and “great magical art”.
