The Fiddle Creek Arts Group, in conjunction with the Marcus Public Library and the Plymouth County Historical Museum, is delighted to bring poet Tom Montag to Northwest Iowa for a series of readings and a writing workshop.
Poet and essayist Tom Montag was born and raised on a farm at Curlew, Iowa, and now lives in Wisconsin. Montag is “a true middle western voice”, who has always been interested in the poetry of place and “the hold that the land has on those of us who live here”. His writing reflects his upbringing, and he seems to define the very character of the Midwest, one character at a time. Retired from a career in the printing industry, Montag is the author of several books of poetry and prose, as well as anthologies and memoirs, and his poetic voice amplifies the autochthonous prosody of the great Midwest. He recalls his early years in Iowa in his memoir, Curlew: Home, which was read on Iowa Public Radio in 2002, and his poem "Lecturing My Daughter in Her First Fall Rain" has been permanently incorporated into the design of the Milwaukee Convention Center. He is a singer and songwriter and plays bass as often as he can. Tom teaches creative nonfiction and poetry, and his work has appeared in numerous literary magazines.
Mr. Montag’s appearance is made possible by a generous donation from the Lois Krekow Legacy Fund and the family of Kay Krekow.
